How do I look at this poignant unresolved case?
Imagine Praia da Luz, May 3, 2007. The sun has just set behind the ocean, and the village is bustling with tourists enjoying their meals. Three young children, including Madeleine McCann, are sleeping in apartment 5A; their parents are dining with friends at the Tapas restaurant 55 meters away. What happens next remains one of the most talked-about mysteries of our time.
In recent years, the media and law enforcement agencies have focused primarily on German sex offender Christian Brückner. Understandably, given his past. But is he truly the perpetrator of Madeleine McCann's disappearance? Or are we staring at a suspect based on a loose sand? In this blog post, I explain why I find this caveat important – and why the "inside apartment 5A" scenario remains strange from an investigative perspective and still holds water.
Why Christian Brückner is not a perpetrator but a suspect
Over the years I have done some statements at the Telegraph about Madeleine McCann and also in 2024 about this Christian Brückner.
Does location nowadays, or according to German law, also constitute perpetration?
Brückner received between 7:32 PM and 8:02 PM A 30-minute incoming phone call via the only Vodafone mast on the water tower in Praia da Luz (coverage ≈ 2.5 km). So he was demonstrably in the area.
But Madeleine McCann wasn't reported missing until around 10 p.m., so who knows he was still in the area then? His car wasn't seen near the apartment. The same cell tower also covers the parking lot at the beach, where Brückner regularly stayed with his camper.
“Presence in Luz” is therefore not proof of a burglary or residence in apartment 5A.
No forensic trace and no signs of breaking and entering
Yes, this Bruckner is no angel and was known for breaking into various places during tourist seasons, using the money to live off of. He almost always did this with someone else. Nothing was discovered about this that evening. In fact, no signs of forced entry were found in the apartment.

The digital storage proves a pattern of malice, but nothing has been said about a direct link to Maddie, and especially in a media case like this, it would have been made public or at least leaked long ago. This isn't the only case that has been reopened; a total of five missing persons cases have been reopened against him.
Witnesses with a statement is mainly unclear and noise
Both a bar friend and a cellmate claim that Brückner "confessed something about a child." The known detail is that both witnesses were themselves under pressure from the authorities and even profited from it. No independent confirmation of their stories has been found so far.
I really try to be open to the possibility but this is also a classic example of jailhouse testimony – legally weak, susceptible to manipulation.
Is it strange that the German government wants to keep this man behind bars? I don't think so at all, and rightly so. He's simply a monster.
Why Madeleine McCann's apartment still catches the eye
Unexplained odors
British sniffer dogs Eddie (corpse odor) and Keela (blood) located the floor near the wardrobe in bedroom 5A and the boot of the Renault Scenic, which the McCanns had only hired weeks later.
There was no exact DNA match Found with Madeleine McCann – the material couldn't be properly tested. The fact is, that smell shouldn't be there!
Fingerprint & no signs of breaking and entering
It only Fingerprint trail on the window frame where Kate says it was open is Kate McCann's own. There are no signs of breaking in Found on the window, shutter, or frame. Everything indicated that these were simply closed and didn't offer easy access.
So who could enter 5A undetected? Someone with a key or knowledge of the routine.
Inconsistencies in statements
Originally, the Tapas friends stated that they checked "every 30 minutes." This was later revised to "every 7-8 minutes." These changing accounts have fueled the suspicion of coordinated explanations after the disappearance for years.
The fact is that there is no hard evidence and that, given the statements, it was indeed a check by one of the people at the table somewhere between 30 and 60 minutes.
Formally free, but not conclusive in terms of content
The Portuguese Public Prosecutor's Office lifted the July 2008 the suspect status ('arguido') of Kate and Gerry due to lack of evidence

Conclusion
Brückner is in the picture because of his criminal profile and presence, but no evidence places him physically in 5A or in contact with Madeleine McCann.
The scenario that something went wrong inside 5A – whether accidentally or not – has not been forensically refuted.
As long as there's no body, no forensic evidence, and no irrefutable confession, this case remains mired in a mosaic of clues, contradictions, and unanswered questions. Both the scenarios of a kidnapping by an external perpetrator and that of an internal tragedy with a cover-up remain – legally speaking – valid.
And perhaps that is the most painful part of it all: no child should disappear in this way, and no parent should have to live with that doubt.
